Abstract

Croatian philosopher and also a Buddhist hermit monk Čedomil Veljačić (1915–1997) by his prolific output and his coverage of many philosophical topics, undoubtedly takes a distinguished place in Croatian philosophical and cultural contemporaneity. In this paper author gives a detailed explication of his life and work, i.e., by his own critical reflection on Veljačić’s manner of life and on some constituent parts of his philosophy he tries to show the greatness of Veljačić’s philosophical personality. In the wider context of Ćedomil Veljačić’s concern for Asian philosophies – both in case of historical synthesis and in case of his studies in comparative philosophy – author also aims to describe Veljačić’s own philosophical positions and within them to designate the humanistic orientation of his philosophising by which he tended to respond at the request of philosophical thinking as he understood it in its function of consideration of the human life.
