Abstract

The author begins with the omnipresence of powerful mass
media industries and the need to have them universally
researched, taking the example of Croatian culture as a
segment of our social reality, because it stresses the
ontological status of culture in society, which is produced by
society and "culture". After explaining the fundamental
concepts (media, culture) and the basic divisions of the
media (printed; electronic; new media) the author warns of
the, diachronically speaking, multilingual quality of our
communication models and informs of the theoretical
approaches to the main media unit, the text, from the
viewpoint of literary science, i.e. journalism. The author
suggests – as a possible one – the research model that
explains the four basic levels crucial to the realisation of
relations between the media and culture (information;
critical reception; the media as areas of realisation of
cultural forms; the media – a reflection and source of the
history of Croatian culture).
