Abstract

Josip Leovic (1885-1963) belongs to those Osijek artists of the first half of the 20th century whose artistic work, and especially his sculptural section has been insufficiently kown, researched and generally neglected in expert analyses. This paper emphasizes Leovic’s sculptural work under the patronage of rich Osijeker industrialist, the owner of furniture and tools for making furniture factory Rudolf Povischil. Josip Leovic made several sculptures for his patron of the arts in the mid 20s of the 20th century. The most unique group of sculptures was created made between 1925-1927 for a public garden next to Povischil villa outside Osijek. This specific symbolical public garden with its sculptures represents a unique example in the art history of Croatian public garden plastic art. It contains monumental sculptural works made of unspecific sculptural material that should be registred in the Croatian sculptural symbolism. In addition to the analysis of sculptural works made by Leović for Rudolf Povischil, the paper descripts shortly on his patron of the arts as well.
