Abstract

The fact that literary texts can be read and interpreted by means of economic terms such as exchange, debt, value and the like is taken as a starting point for considering relations between literature and the economy. In this essay the poems V and XLVIII from the Kolajna (The Necklace) book of poetry by Tin Ujević are used to indicate how these poems can be interpreted as expressions of their own literary indebtedness, of their dependency on and attachment to both the preceding and subsequent literary texts. Apart from the relations between the texts, this paper will also elaborate on a relationship between the lyric poem and the reader. Since both poems address the reader in their respective ways, this analysis aims to show, by means of deconstruction and psychoanalysis, how both poems open up a possibility of reading them as statements about the reader as a perennially indebted subject, i.e. the one who owes his own identity to texts.
