Abstract

The present study investigates phrasemes which express emotions found in football reports in daily newspapers. The corpus consists of reports published during the European Football Championship 2012 and the World Football Championship 2014 that were extracted from the German newspaper Die Zeit and the Croatian newspaper Večernji list. The research is based on the classification of affect by Martin and White (2005: 49– 51), who differentiate between un/happiness (sadness, hate, happiness, love), in/security (anxiety, fear, confidence, trust), dis/satisfaction (ennui, displeasure, curiosity, respect). The following research question is answered: Do the phrasemes in question express emotions explicitly, i.e. do they denote emotions, or do they indicate emotions only when placed in a particular context? The expression of emotion with the help of phrasemes is analysed in German and Croatian football reports in order to determine similarities and differences. The analysis reveals that most phrasemes in both languages denote an emotion in their phraseological meaning, whereas only a small number of phrasemes express emotions only when placed in context. Phrasemes in both languages belong foremostly to the categories of dis/satisfaction and in/security.
