Abstract
Taking the recent changes in the Croatian legislation, which created the possibility for psychosocial treatment for the perpetrators of family violence, as a starting point, the paper describes the Austrian experiences in the fight against violence in the family. Special attention was paid to (1) police powers to immediately remove the perpetrator of violence from his home for ten days, (2) the work of intervention centres that use a proactive approach to the victim of family violence, and (3) the model of psychosocial treatment of abusers that has been applied in Austria since 1999. The aforementioned experienced have been analysed in the light of the need to create prerequisites for a coordinated, proactive and quick action in cases of family violence in Croatia.
