Abstract
The objective of this paper was to investigate the nutritive value of two groups of hay samples originating from the family farms of northwestern Croatia. Group 1 (GR 1) consisted of 48 hay samples collected from 2011 to 2013 while group 2 (GR 2) constained of 34 hay samples collected from 2014 to 2016. Hay samples GR 1 consisted more (P<0.001) crude proteins (CP), water soluble carbohydrates (WSC), metabolizable energey (ME) and higher Dvalue (digestibility of organic matter (OM) in dry matter (DM)) compared with GR 1. Hay samples GR 2 constained more OM compared with GR 1. It was concluded that the investigated hay samples were of medium to low quality. The reasons for this can be numerous, but due to the investigated nutrient parameters and the climatic conditions in the area, the emphasised reason is advanced maturity stage of forage when cut for the production of high quality hay.
