Abstract
Ferdo Sisic (Vinkovci, March 3, 1869 – Zagreb, January 21, 1940) was engaged
in history during his secondary education and especially as a student
of philosophy. Right upon completing his studies, on September 15,
1892 he was appointed for a teacher of Kr. Senior grammar school in Gospic.
Next year he was transferred to Senior general-program secondary
school in Zagreb. From October 3, 1894 he was teaching history and geography
in Osijek. He earned his PhD in 1900, two years after he habilitated
in the area of the Croatian history in the class of Dr. Tadija Smiciklas and
was appointed for private assistant professor of the Croatian history from
the 12th to 15th century at the Faculty of Philosophy. Because of that in 1903
he was transferred from Osijek to Kr. classics-program secondary school
in Gornji grad, Zagreb. On October 2, 1906 he was appointed for an assistant
professor of the professor’s chair (current Department) for the Croatian
history and in that way he took over position from historian Tadija
Smiciklas. Through the entire period of his educational and pedagogical
work he was writing and researching tirelessly, filling in data and historical
facts as well as correcting results and in that way he blazed the new trails
in searching for more authentic picture about the Croatian past. He was
writing about the articles, discussions and books of many local and foreign
writers in newspapers and magazines. Besides scientific and educational
work, he was also engaged in politics for a short period but unsuccessfully.
Although he did not write a complete and extensive scientific synthesis, he
made a couple of shorter and longer reviews of the Croatian history and
with his opus he belongs to the greatest Croatian historians.
