Abstract

The Barbara Petchenik Award was launched by the International Cartographic Association (ICA) in 1993 in memory of Barbara Petchenik, a vice-chairman of the association and cartographer who had spent her life working with maps and children. The awards are given every two years during the International Cartography Conference, with one recipient from each continent, if possible, and paying special attention to the ages of the participants. The aim of the competition is to promote children’s creative expressions of the world through art, thus improving their cartographic perceptions and perceptions of their environment.
