Abstract

After the Great Earthquake in 1880, the Zagreb cathedral was reconstructed in the early 20th century using the stone from the surrounding area of Zagreb. Lithotamnium limestone from the quarry at the foot of Medvednica, Vrapče potok and Podsused (Litavac) was used in construction. It proved to be unsuitable for the outer parts of stone sculptures that started deteriorating quickly due to acid rains. The first subsequent reconstruction took place as early as in 1930 until 1931 when a part of ashlar stones was replaced. In the reconstruction of 1967 - 1968 Bizek stone was used, and in the most recent one which started in 1987, and is still ongoing, lithotamnium limestone and Bizek were replaced by the tufa stone from Tivoli. Stonework workshops from Pučišća (island of Brač) have participated in the reconstruction. This paper provides a rich illustrative material regarding the reconstruction of stone parts.
