Abstract

The present paper deals with Krleža’s play Aretej ili legenda o svetoj Ancili, rajskoj ptici (1959). On the grounds of the previous reviews of the play and its different stage performances, finding support in the newer interpretations of different segments of Krleža’s literary work (by P. Brebanović, T. Brlek, M. Čale) and particularly in the analysis of Dnevnik 1943 (by L. Čale Feldman), the paper tries to intertwine the play with the motives from similar texts. The play is analytically connected with Pogovor za dvije drame: Areteja i Jurja Križanića and Krleža’s writings from 1942. The purpose of this paper is to try to enlighten those interesting historical parallelisms and multiple reflections of characters within the characters of Aretej from the perspective inspired by the analysis of narrative strategies in Krleža’s texts which deal with wondrous transformations which remind us of a dream, describing the writer’s multiannual obsession by the phantoms of historical figures, who reenact almost hallucinating doubling of texts within texts, always bending over each other, displacing and obsessively rewriting each other.
