Abstract

The comparative advantage of a business entity in today's economy is defined by
the intellectual capital that each business entity possesses. The basic aim of the research
was to investigate and prove the interdependence of the quality of management in a
business entity and achieving business excellence. Emphasis is placed on the level of
vocational qualifications and an adequate field of management education in state and
county port administrations. Methods of interviewing and surveying were used to
investigate the management staff - directors and chairmen of the governing councils in 6
state port authorities and 22 county port authorities. The results show that the state port
authorities lead, opposed to county port authorities, in the relevance of qualifications of
management personnel, which was immediately noticeable in the research process itself.
From the beginning of the study, the state port authority personnel understood the
importance of the research itself and the possibility of progress through the obtained
guidelines. It is possible to conclude that appropriate vocational training that results in
appropriate knowledge and skills can enhance the performance of the port authorities,
irrespective of the gender of the management.
