Abstract

Political, economic, social and media power of sport has opened the door to
intelligence activities. Due to a lack of similar research in the field of sports, the study
had two aims: 1) review of espionage cases in sport; 2) identification of areas for business
intelligence application in sport, from business and sports prospective. Scientific and
professional articles and materials of authoritative media in English were gathered.
Contrary to the presented espionage cases from the domain of the illegal eavesdrop and
recording of sports teams, hacking the information systems, theft etc., business
intelligence as a legal method provides a new dimension to the sports ecosystem, enabling
sports organizations, federations and clubs to gain comparative advantage over
competition. In addition to legal term, the advantage of business intelligence over
espionage is described by the fact that it allows a systematic, not just periodically support
to the sport-business process and it is assumed that it will become an important part of
the sports ecosystem soon. Two main interlinked levels of business intelligence
applicability in sport are identified, use for purpose of achieving business results and for
purpose of achieving sports results. Although certain restrictions (gathered material only
in English), the importance of the study is in raising awareness of the methods of illegal
espionage activities in sport for the purpose of preventing and sanctioning as well as in
identifying the practical application of the business intelligence methods in sport (full or
segmental).
