Abstract
The article deals with Vladimir Devidé's writing style and his representations of Japanese literature and art as expressions of nihonjinron theories. His Japanese studies writings are interpreted as reflections of time in which the author has lived and literature that he has read. Such a style, based on ontological and epistemological distinction drawn between the „Orient", ie. Japan, and the "Occident", would now be characterized as essentialist and a product of author's personal interests and ideas about Japanese culture and art. Bearing in mind the importance of Devidé's legacy in Croatia, this article aims to deconstruct some of his ideas within the context of nihonjinron or "theories about the Japanese."
