Abstract

A preliminary detection of complex hydrological relations in karst systems can be carried out through analysing precipitation and discharge time-series, with an emphasis on the importance i.e. recommendation for implementing higher-order partial cross-correlation function. Partial cross-correlation function isolates control time series that have a significant influence on the correlation of observed input-output precipitation and discharge time-series. The paper’s contribution is shown through the implementation of correlation and higher order partial correlation analysis to characterize hydrological relations of the two neighbouring karst springs and their precipitation – discharge relation. The analysis was based on available hourly values of meteorological dana (precipitation, temperature and relative air humidity) and hydrological data (discharges) from the stations in the basins of the springs Jadro and Žrnovnica. It was proven that the time-series of temperatures, relative humidity and discharges have a significant influence on the precipitation-discharge correlation of dry and wet periods. The demonstrated approach improved the investigation of complex hydrological relations of the two neighbouring karst springs and can be generally applied
