Abstract

In a chimney life cycle, due to its age, wind and other atmospheric conditions, tectonic activity, construction flaws, and the change of physical and mechanical properties of construction materials, significant chimney deformations and inclinations are plausible and catastrophic collapses can occur. Therefore, it is necessary to periodically analyze the stability of high industrial chimneys, whereby one of the fundamental inspection parameters being the inclination of the chimney axis. Many classical and modern methods for determination and analysis of chimney inclination have been developed. This paper describes a method of testing and analyzing the chimney inclination based on the measurement of the horizontal chimney cross section based on the preestablished geodetic reference network. Circular chimney cross sections are modeled by method of circular regression, and finally the spatial chimney axis is derived by 3D linear regression. In this paper a practical example of the testing and analysis of the inclination of a masonry chimney in the area of the former Duga Resa Cotton Industry in Duga Resa, Croatia, has been given.
