Abstract

The study investigated: 1) the relationship between anthropometric, physiological, biochemical and personality data of 50 middle-aged males before and after a four month physical conditioning program, and 2) the difference between high - and low physical fitness groups (n=12 each) both initially and finally. Ten variables were involved and they were; age, percent of lean body weight, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, submaximal heart rate, physical fitness score, cholesterol, glucose, extraversion, and neuroticism. Factor analysis of the pre- and post-program data showed that there were relationships among the four domains. In particular, emotional stability was related to physiological and biochemical variables. In support of the correlational analysis, the univariate t-test and the multivariate discriminant function analysis showed significant differences between the high- and low- fitness groups at the pre- and post- program tests.
