The School Workload of Students – From the Classroom Factor and the Teaching Atmosphere to Factors of Satisfaction With the School

Abstract

In respect of the students’ formed perception of their school workload, this paper discusses the fundamental factors of the classroom and teaching atmosphere: the teacher’s support, cohesiveness of the classroom, examination anxiety, and the school workload borne by students. The paper underlines that the students’ school workload is one of the fundamental factors of the classroom
and learning atmosphere. The students’ school workload is formed by direct and indirect factors. The direct factors of the students’ school workload are: teacher, timetable, textbooks and parents’ expectations. The indirect factors are: conditions at school, conditions of family life, extracurricular activities, and homework. The empirical part of the paper shows the school workload experienced by students in the 6th and 8th grade of city and suburban elementary schools. It is shown that there is a statistically significant difference in the factor
of school workload according to the type of school, where the school workload is higher for students of suburban schools than for those of city schools. It has also been established that there is a statistically significant difference in the factor of school workload according to the gender of respondents, where the school workload of boys is higher than that of girls. It is also shown that there is a statistically significant difference in the factor of school workload according to the age of respondents, where the school workload is higher for students in the 6th grade than for students in the 8th grade.
