Abstract

The article presents connection of the Croatian nation-building thought
and needs for the establishment of the national news agency. Right after
the Republic of Croatia became independent, on December 22, 1990, conditions
have been created again for the initiation of national agencies: in
the Republic of Croatia HINA has been established and Habena in Bosnia
and Herzegovina. Author researched factors which have determined
the development of HINA and he implied two parallel processes which
slowed down the transition of political-propaganda agency towards news
agency of democratic and civil society: the first of them as unusual active
interest of politics for maintaining the control over the agency in spite of
the change of Law on HINA. That law prevented the direct control and
sluggish change of a journalist from the ideological concept of sociopolitical
employee to the professional journalist.
