Abstract

The third book in the Arhitekton series of the ArTresor edition is a monograph dedicated to the Viennese architect Carl Seidl (1858-1936) and his prolific work. He profoundly influenced the part of the Adriatic region between Volosko and Lovran with his projects that were predominantly realized in Opatija. He thus made a major contribution to Opatija’s visual identity that has characterized it to these days - a small romantic town immersed in lush Mediterranean greenery. This interesting monograph, that has attracted wider audience, is an adapted doctoral dissertation written by the art historian Berislav Valušek, defended at the Faculty of Architecture of the University in Zagreb in 2010. Besides a multi-layer synthetic text on Seidl’s architecture, the author also presents his study on the cultural milieu and Viennese influences at the turn of the centuries. The monograph contains a detailed catalogue of Seidl’s 31 buildings built in Opatija, most of which are residential villas and hotels.
