Abstract

Yellow foxtail (Setaria glauca L.) is a narrow‐leaved weed species that occurs regularly in all row crops in continental Croatia. The success of this species may be attributed to rapid fruiting, large production of seeds and their longevity. This species is cosmopolitan in temperate zones with an area of distribution ranging from 55 °N to 45 °S latitude. It is able to adapt to different climatic conditions, so in warmer climates it develops higher, while in colder climate lower biological minimum (Tb). For the area of continental Croatia (Šašinovec) estimated Tb is 6.6 ° C, while biological water potential (Ψb) is ‐0.71 MPa. Yellow foxtail hardly tolerates water stress which is why it occurs in years and areas with higher rainfall. This species grows from a shallow layer of soil, ie
from a depth of 1 ‐ 5 cm. It grows on different soil types with a pH of 6.1 to 8.0. As a weed species on agricultural land, Setaria glauca can establish a high density per unit area and thus greatly reduce the yield of cultivated crops. In addition to direct damage, this species is also responsible for increasing cleaning costs and may be an alternative host to crop diseases.
