Abstract
A large number of plant species, many of them important for horticulture and crop production, are endangered in the nature. If the reason for their endangerment lies in over-exploitation for economic reasons, commercial production would be a way of their protection. One of the wild ornamental plants which is in Croatia exploited in the nature by florists, although it is under legal protection, is Ruscus hypoglossum. Even though the species is highly ornamental, its use as a cut plant or for planting in urban green areas is limited by, among other things, the non-existing domestic production. Precisely for these reasons, the project of protection through introduction into cultivation of this species was started. In the paper, aspects of protection of endangered wild ornamental species through cultivation will be illustrated on the example of Ruscus hypoglossum.
