Abstract

Notion "sports heart" was described for the first time in 1899 (Henschen, Williams and Arnold). Dimensions of sport heart volume were growing parallely with intensity and duration of training and paralelly with improvement of cardiovascular system functional capacities. According to recent opinion the greatest heart volumes can be found in bicyclists. On the basis of our research on the group of best Yugoslav waterpolo players. The mean volume is 1214± 22 ccm.
The cause of so great volumes can be:
- big intensity and duration of strain in water during waterpolo game, when big mass of skeleton muscles is activated
- unusually great anthropometrical dimensions and consequently big body mass of waterpolo players; and heart volume is proportional to body mass.
Among our subjects the biggest absolute heart volumes were found, known in literature recently. Heart volume of a waterpolo player was 1700 ccm, and heart volume of a woman swimmer was 1150 ccm.
