Abstract

Philosophy course syllabus at the Piarist College in Dubrovnik for the year 1788, published in Esercizio accademico di trigonometria rettilinea, e sferica, contained plane and spherical trigonometry theorems and problems. There were 48 plane trigonometry theorems and problems, one third of whice were practical ones applicable for the measurement both on land and at sea. Spherical trigonometry was presented with 76 theorems and problems. Twenty of them were from the astronomy. They could be solved on land but their application was meant for use at sea.
All theorems and problems were expressed in words without symbols, figures or numbers except for the angle between ecliptic and equator stated as 23° 29'. Answers and solutions were not printed. Some theorems of plane and spherical trigonometry are analysed in this paper and compared with modern methods for solving the problems. A few practical problems are also discussed here as well as their application to the navigational practice in the 18th century and today.
