Abstract

At the beginning of the 21st century, more than half of the world’s population lived in cities. Cities undergo major structural change and face social, economic, environmental, and political challenges. Increasing pressures on city life are also causing a decline in the quality of city life. To meet the aforementioned challenges in academic, scientific, and political discourse, various terms are increasingly used to reflect the tendency of struggle with the new changes, which often include the notion of a smart city. There is still no clear definition of the concept, but it is often linked to the concept of sustainable economic, environmental, and social development. Given the lack of research that problematizes the concept of a smart city in the Croatian urban context, this research was conducted to understand the mentioned concept in the Croatian urban context by applying an online questionnaire to a sample of public city employees who are professionally related to this issue.
