Abstract

The aim of the investigation was to established the degree of correlation between latent morphological characteristics, defined by longitudinal (L) and transverse skeletal dimensions (T), body volume and mass (V) and quantity of adipose tissue (M), and a set of latent dimensions extracted from situational tests for the evaluation of motoric abilities important in the game of handball, and between latent morphological characteristics and a set of evaluations of performance in handball. The latent morphological dimensions were calculated on the basis of 32 anthropometric variables measured in 213 students of the Faculty of Physical Education in Zagreb (Hošek and Jeričević, 1982). Determinations of these latent dimensions in a subsample of 54 students handball players formed the logical system of predictors. The latent dimensions of specific motoric abilities, defined as: situational precision (PREUZ), manipulation of the ball-throwing power (SIZBLO), were extracted from 21 situational tests to which the same subsample obtained by consideration of the evaluation of judges who over the course of four matches awarded points for technique (TEHNIK), efficiency in attack (NAPAD), efficiency in defence (OBRANA), player creativity (STVARA), responsibility and tactical discipline (ODGOVO), commitment in the game (ANGAZI), behaviour and obedience to the rules of the game (PONASA) and overall performance (OPCOCJ).
The relationship between morphological dimensions and each of these criterial set of dimensions were obtained by means of canonical analysis of covariance (Momirović, Dobrić and Karaman, 1983). The relationships between morphological dimensions and each individual criterial variable were determined using the stupid regression analysis (Štalec and Momirović, 1983).
The canonical analysis of covariance of latent morphological dimensions and situational motoric abilities gave only one significantly correlated pair of quasicanonical factors. It was noticed that the morphological body type which can be designated stenomorphy (above average skeletal build and above average muscular body mass) has favourable effects on the power that handball players are able to develop when throwing the ball, that is, on absolute explosive power modulated by the specific technique of handball. This morphological structure, however, has no effect on the other situational-motoric abilities. The stupid regression analysis also showed a very weak connection between situational-motoric abilities and morphological build. In this case the only significant multiple correlation was found between ball-throwing power and the system of morphological build. In this case the only significant multiple correlation was found between ball-throwing power and the system of morphological dimensions.
The system of evaluations of performance is not significantly correlated with the latent morphological dimensions. It is assumed that this result is due to the fact that the variability of playing skill in these subjects is more a consequence of varying exposure to teaching and practice an less one of potential abilities and characteristics.
