Abstract

An investigation was carried out on 299 top decathlon competitors and 200 top pentathlon competitors in order to determine the degree of validity of points scored for results achieved in official mixed event contents.
A classical regression analysis was made to establish if there is any loss of significant information following the transformation of the original results into points.
On the basis of the obtained results it bay be concluded that the amount of information shared by the system of original variables with the criterion variable (total points) is 98.06% and 99.22% for the decathlon and pentathlon, respectively. This means the points system employed in current athletic practice for scoring mixed events satisfies the strictest validity criteria.
These results bring into question the justification of the decision by the International Athletics Federation that in future results of mixed events be scored according to the new "Progressive" tables. Such decision has more an empirical than a scientific basis.
