Abstract

Earthquake occurrence is unavoidable and unpredictable, although the wealth of data and our understanding is growing on the earthquakes which occurred or can occur on a location. Victims, sufferings, damages as consequences of an earthquake are caused by failures of buildings due to design, building or use not good enough. The behaviour of buildings in earthquakes is getting clearer with every new earthquake, and safety today can be significantly improved – for both new and existing buildings. A short overview of known solutions is given.
