Abstract
The group of 110 students of physical education has been taken as a sample of this research. The running speed on particular sections of the track, as well as along the whole 100 - meter track has been measured. The aim of the research was to evaluate the level of students' sprinting abilities on the basis of achieved results.
In analyzing the 100 - meter race results achieved at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972, we have found significant differences between particular space and time parameters, whereas the differences between particular groups of students have been much smaller. The top sprinter's running speed decreases slowly and evenly after they have reached the maximum speed, whereas the running speed of all groups of students decreases rapidly, but increases again after reach the lowest point.
This points out the fact that the final result achieved by students only partly depends on the level of their abilities, whereas it mainly depends on the level of their speed endurance. This is not the case with top sprinters. It is for this reason that a 60-meter race should be the criterion for determining the speed abilities of this group of runners.
