Abstract

This paper defines the notion of a popular theatre play, commonly written for local amateur popular theatres. The characteristics of such plays are determined based on professional and scientific literature. The occurrence of these characteristics is analysed in the oeuvre of Tonči Surjan Trofo, a local popular theatre playwriter from Vela Luka, Korčula Island. He is a recognized and award-winning popular theatre playwriter who comes from a place with a longstanding tradition of amateur theatre, and whose works are regularly performed by the Vela Luka Popular Theatre. Therefore, his oeuvre is ideal for the review of relevant analytical categories related to popular theatre plays. The paper shows that the work of Tonči Surjan Trofo is a paradigmatic example of this type of theatre.
