Abstract

Triticale (X Triticosecale Witt.) is small grain cereal that was created by crossing between wheat and rye. In production triticale appeared in the second half of the 20th century. Due to their biological properties and advancement in selection, production areas of triticale increase year by year, in recent years in the world triticale has been sown on over 4 000 000 ha, and the largest producers being Poland, Germany and France. In the Republic of Croatia triticale production has increased several times over the past few years and currently is being sown on over 15 000 ha. There are winter, facultative and spring forms of triticale in production. At the Bc Institute triticale breeding program began in the 1990s. The first winter variety Bc Goran was recognized in 2004 and it is currently the main variety in the Republic of Croatia. The continuity of successful breeding program confirmed by the recognition of the winter variety Bc Ranko in 2010, and continued in 2019 by the recognition of varieties Bc Trenk and Bc Zmaj. Bc Trenk is winter variety with early vegetation, low stems and excellent resistance to diseases and lodging. Bc Zmaj is a facultative variety with very early vegetation, low stems and also good resistance to diseases. According to the results of the Commission for Varieties Recognition of Republic of Croatia, Bc Trenk achieved 24.2% and Bc Zmaj 15.6% higher grain yield than the standard variety.
