Destruction of a Family House Box
Lenko Pleština
Abstract
The idea of breaking up the customary “box” of the single-family house was Frank Lloyd Wright’s central theme, the essential feature of De Stijl, and an fascinating inspiration for many other architects (Mies, Neutra, Rudolph, Eisenman), right down to the present. In addition to purely architectural cross-influence, the author also mentions the new art of Cubism, Malevich’s Suprematism, Techno-Futurism, new-age sensibilities, new scientific discoveries and practical inventions, which he considers as complementary to new architectural sensibilities. Under such circumstances various designs for houses can be regarded as part of efforts to “destroy the box”.
