Synonyms for Comfort and Discomfort in Zagreb

Abstract

The author analyzes ambiences awaking feelings of pleasure or its opposite which he calls synonyms for comfort and discomfort. The work was carried out in Zagreb on the basis of questionnaires from 1996 and 1997 answered by 279 respondents. Urban quarters, squares, streets, parks, buildings, etc. could all be considered as synonyms for comfort or discomfort. It was shown that the Upper Town, Maksimir Park, Ban Josip Jelačić Square, the Croatian National Theatre, Zrinjevac Square and Lake Jarun awake pleasurable feelings in most respondents, while Dubrava, New Zagreb, the Flower Market, the Ferimport Building on Marshal Tito Square and Kvaternikov Square are places of discomfort for most respondents.
