Abstract

Supporters of an ad hoc approach like Charles Jencks and Nathan Silver anticipated Post-Modernist architecture. They criticized Modernism and insisted on the use of fragments from the past. They sought solutions for the complex relations between architecture and nature in expressionism (spontaneity of creation) and in self-regulating architecture-architecture without an architect (vernacular architecture).

Keywords

ad hoc-ism; Eclecticism; Modernism; purism; Expressionism; Surrealism
