Abstract
Based on material gathered from the 1970s, the article shows the traditional nutrition of the inhabitants of Podgorje, the southern slope of Velebit, in the Starigrad-Paklenica municipality. There are two different cultures of nutrition, based on geographical position: Dinaric (the mountain settlements of Podgorje/varoši) and Adriatic (the littoral settlements: Punta/Selo, Zukva/Seline, punta Tribanj). In the historical context of the 1960s and 1970s (boom of tourism), people of the Podgorje-Glavičari area began to migrate from the mountain to the littoral, which led to the mixing of the two nutrition cultures, thus enriching the tourist offer. After the 1970s to the end of the 20th century the traditional culture and original cuisine were neglected in the tourist offer, and were replaced by “modern fast food”. The article suggests that some forgotten traditional dishes should be revived to provide a more diverse tourist offer. Considering that the nutrition of southern Podgorje has not been systematically researched and no written sources today exist, the article presents nutrition from the end of the 19th to the end of the 20th century from the memory of tellers and compares it with used recent sources from northern Podgorje/Primorje and Ravni kotari, with emphasis on Ravni kotari. The article’s goal is to make the people of southern Podgorje aware of the value of their cultural heritage and encourage them to revitalize their traditional nutrition, so as to further develop the cultural tourism of Podgorje.
