Abstract

Endogenous rural development is a newer approach to agriculture and rural areas, in which the focus is on local stakeholders who define their own development paths and initiatives. One of the possible development initiatives is establishment of short supply chains, which enables small-scale producers to resist the negative effects of global supply chains, in which their lack of economic scale puts them in a disadvantageous position. Positive effects of short supply chains on producers, and also on rural areas, are presented in a short literature review. In order to find the potential for application of short supply chains in Croatia, we carried out a survey among Croatian agricultural producers in which we established positive attitudes towards characteristics and prerequisites that short supply chains entitle.
