In Search Of The Lost Past: From Oksana Zabuzhko’s “Family Saga” Museum Of Abandoned Secrets To Maria Matios’s “Panoramic Novel” Beech Land To Vasyl’ Makhno’s “Roman-Fleuve” Eternal Calendar

Abstract
In the last decade and a half Ukrainian literature has experienced a revival of the novel that take the form of national epics of the return of the family and collective memory. In the article three novels – monumental narratives – are examined that show the life story of several generations in times of tragic historical trials – Museum of Abandoned Secrets by Oksana Zabuzhko, Beech Land by Maria Matios, Eternal Calendar by Vasyl’ Makhno.
In narratives of Ukrainian literature nowadays there is a surge of attempts to re-inscribe Ukrainian history, to leave behind historical and cultural narratives of the past imposed by the colonial rulers of Ukraine, and to present the experience of the 20th and previous centuries through the prism of ordinary people’s experiences and in the context of the formation of Ukrainian national identity.
