Abstract

This paper presents the method of designing a Module for learning and exercising the syntax of the English language. It also elaborates on the motives for starting this interdisciplinary project within the Learning English Online system. The key element of the Module is a web application intended for exercising the English language syntax. It is actually an interactive game which offers the user a series of mixed elements of a sentence and asks them to line them up in the original sentence format. The starting sentences are cut into separate words that the application puts in the cards and rearranges, and the user is asked to arrange the sentence in such a way that the cards are selected in a specific order, in accordance with the English grammar and syntax rules. The user is also presented with an educational text on the syntax of the English language in general, as well as the one relating to the key differences between the syntax of both the English language and the Croatian language. The Module is a valuable contribution to the LEO Internet application, especially given the fact that similar modules are available mainly in large commercial systems offering online instruction.
