Abstract

The article aims to analyse causality as an argumentative technique in essays written by FLE (French as foreign language) learners. The essay is a task often used in foreign language classes to teach and test learners’ ability to conduct argumentative discourse. We assume that the speaker who writes an essay, considered here as an argumentative statement, creates a speech act with the aim of persuading his/her interlocutors. To achieve this goal more easily, he is supposed to nuance the causal relations by modifying them either by quoting objective, scientific data or by means of a particular view of an authority or of the group to which the interlocutor belongs. The analysis of the compositions will make it possible to observe the speakers’ attitude to the task of written production in the context of their language training.
