Abstract

The article follows the history of the different castle warriors/castle noble families residing in Dijankovec from the middle of the fourteenth to the end of the fifteenth century. The families belonged to different generationes of the castle warriors of Križevci County, and all of them had estates in the village of Dijankovec. The history of each line shows the common points in their lives. Firstly, they were members of the nobility, but in a lesser rank, which means that they were not well-off and often had problems to repay their debts and meet their costs. They payed out the quarta puellaris mainly in land, not in money, as was usual among the lesser nobility. The marriage strategy was different in the cases of male and female members of such families: the male ones choose wives from equal or higher status, but the female ones choose husbands from equal or lesser status. After the ennoblement by King Sigismund, the castle nobles of Križevci (including those of Dijankovec) merged into the lesser nobility of the Križevci County.
