Parish Chronicle of Pićan (1812 – 1832)

Abstract
In the introductory part of the article, the review on hitherto known and published parish chronicles of Istria has been given. The parish chronicle of Pićan was until now not known. The chronicle has particular importance for historical research, because Pićan was formerly an episcopal see of millennial duration. The parish chronicle of Pićan was written by the parish priest and dean of Pićan Ivan Antun Težak (1776-1837). The author, that is writer of the chronicle was a prominent person within the society of Central Istria of that period, which is visible also from the records of the chronicle itself. In a separate chapter, rich content of the chronicle and its internal and external characteristics with an emphasis on linguistic specialties is briefly pointed at. The last part of the introduction presents principles of editing. The rest of the article gives the edition of the source.
The chronicle contains the period of twenty years. It is written in chronological orded from July 1812 to the end of 1832, but in the first pages it recapitulate events since the abolishment of the diocese. Based on the chronicle, it is possible to reconstruct religious and administrative history of Pićan after the abolishment of the diocese of Pićan (Pedena) in more detail with respect to previous scholarship. Looking from the geographical point of view, Težak listed data on Pićan, events in wider surrounding of Pićan, that is Istria, but also mentioning some events in Europe. Regarding topics mentioned in the chronicle, he gives information on the very fact of the abolishment of the diocese, as well as those leading to the establishment of the parish of Pićan. Particularly great attention is awarded to describing meteorological situation and situation within the agrarian life of the Pićanština (Pićan area). The value of the chronicle is also in the author’s personal observations and evaluations of some social and political events characteristic for the first three decades of the nineteenth century. Težak was observer and commentator of not only local, but also of European politics. The last part of the article contains transcription of the prayers and detailed description of the way of administering sacrament of baptism in Croatian language.
