Abstract
Fruit trees of forest or wild cherry, apple and pear were investigated in a 2001- 2005
period. Parent trees of the mentioned species were selected and marked on the territory of
Forest administration, branch office "Delnice", "Karlovac" and "Sisak". The trees were used
for fruit and seed harvesting.
Harvested seed was processed immediately after harvesting, and it was immediately
sowed or put to stratification. Seed germinability was determined and it was 10-15% for
cherry, 70-80% for apple, and 1-2% for pear.
Three methods of stratification were applied: a) seed was kept in polyethylene bags at a
temperature of 1 oC with 10% humidity for 6 weeks and then it was kept in refrigerator on a
temperature of 3-6 oC; b) moist seed was being frozen for 2-6 months between two layers of
moist sand from the river Drava and peat in a 50:50 ratio; c) seed was kept in the open during
winter. The best germinability in seed-beds was achieved by b treatment and sowing
after final processing during the summer or autumn. Height and diameter growth was, on
average, satisfactory and in harmony with referential data. Taking into consideration poor
yield in a 2001 – 2005 and a relatively poor germinability, the research should be continued.
