Abstract
Trees are forest's basic structural element and define its main characteristic. The stand,
being a part of the forest, differs from the forest in one or several significant properties. All
elements which are components of a volume of wood and distribute it in space, are, in its
broadest sense, the structure of the stand.
It is necessary to concentrate much more on the structure of the stand, as well as to its
development, because research results and defined patterns are helpful in planning
silvicultural and management interventions, which facilitate better realization of management
aims through ensuring more benefits from the forest without disturbing ecological and
sociological premises of natural development of our forest ecosystems.
The stand structure can be treated in various ways, depending on the element under
scrutiny. The term stand includes the distribution of the species, number of trees and their
dimensions per area unit, and it is a result of the growth intensity of particular species under
the influence of natural factors and human influences.
The term «structure» most often refers to a diameter structure evaluated on the basis of
measurements of d.b.h., i.e. on the basis of how the number of trees in the stand is distributed
by diameter degrees or classes.
This paper presents research of a development of a number of trees and their d.b.h., as a
temporal function in peduncled oak and common hornbeam stands. Research was carried
out on experimental plots of varying age on the territory of Forest management administration
branch offices Karlovac, Zagreb, Koprivnica, Bjelovar, Na{ice and Vinkovci. This research
focuses on the condition of distribution of a number of trees by diameter categories
in researched stands in the course of their development through a time period of the research.
