Abstract
In this article, we have described a practical example of using the Internet of Things to convert an older (or cheaper) "ordinary" pellet heating system into a "smart" system controlled over the Internet using an application on your mobile phone. We used cheap components to create the control system compared to commercial solutions, and, of course, the knowledge acquired in the undergraduate professional study of mechatronics and the polytechnic specialist graduate professional study of mechanical engineering at the Zagreb University of Applied Sciences. We can now remotely control and monitor central heating system and record real-time consumption data. We achieved system control using microcontrollers, temperature and distance sensors, servo motors, relay modules and appropriate cables. We also created a functional user mobile application, as well as a program code for the correct operation and communication of components, connection to the Internet and remote control by a mobile device. Due to limited space, the program code is not part of this article, but is fully available in the thesis the article is based on and written.
