Abstract

Animal welfare has been promoted in the EU for the last forty years meanwhile in Croatia it obtained a higher significance in 2018 with the implementation of Measure 14 (M14). M14 supports higher than usual standards in cattle husbandry from four areas of animal welfare (improved feeding, improved housing conditions, access to open space, better care) for five livestock sectors: cattle breeding, pig breeding, poultry breeding, goat breeding and sheep breeding. The goal of this paper was to determine changes in supported activities, payment amounts, and rules in previous and upcoming programme period of Common agricultural policy (CAP). In the course of the observed period there has been an increase in the payment amount by livestock unit (LSU) in all sectors, while in pig breeding, goat breeding and sheep breeding sectors some new forms of payment have been introduced compared to the starting year 2018. When it comes to bedding enrichment activities in cattle husbandry the necessary amount of straw/bedding has increased, meanwhile in all sectors the necessary time of education has increased from four to 6 hours a year. It is thought that the higher amounts of financial aid will encourage more interest and farmers’ inclusion in this farming system.
