Abstract

The paper provides a critical overview of the history of the subgenre and the differently defined phenomenon of Nordic noir, and more importantly an overview of the voluminous theoretical production on the topic. The established notions of adaptation (Hutcheon et al.) or appropriation (Agger et al.), which in recent literature denote the dissemination of Nordic noir in the hybrid media environment of interrelated versions of texts (novels, films, TV series, etc.), shall be supplemented by the notion of articulation (Hall). This will serve as a starting point for the analysis of several distinctive examples, with a focus on the film The Guilty (Den Skyldige, 2018) and the cycle of novels by the author duo Roslund & Hellström (2004–2017).
