Abstract

In this paper, we have reconstructed, based on archive material – relevant historical literature – the complicated socio-political and cultural/educational relations and activity of Stefan Mitrov Ljubiša in the area of Dalmatia in the 19th century, discovered new details, and perceived many phenomena during his rich social and political activity. Deeper study of Ljubiša’s speeches, and his minutes from meetings of the Council of Dalmatia and the Imperial Council, shed new light on filling in a picture of the time in which Stefan Mitrov Ljubiša lived and wrote. The beginnings of his more intensive political activity are found in the 1860s, when Ljubiša was elected as a deputy in the Council of Dalmatia (in 1861) by the municipalities of the Bay of Kotor, and in the same year as a deputy in the Imperial Council. Thus began his 17-year-long parliamentary activity, in which he would become one of the most prominent representatives of the Bay of Kotor in the Council of Dalmatia, and thereby one of the most prominent Dalmatians in the Imperial Council in Vienna. Ljubiša, as one of the leaders of the People’s Party, directed his political programme towards achieving its aims – the struggle for equality of people and language within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but particularly the struggle for rapprochement among the Slavic people. Considering the complexity of the events and relations in which the activity of Ljubiša, as a deputy of the Bay of Kotor in the Council of Dalmatia and a deputy in the Vienna Parliament, developed, his social, public and cultural work at the time of the struggle for the national – above all Slavic – identification of his people, we can conclude that Ljubiša deserves a prominent place in the South-Slavic history of the 19th century.
