Responsive Phenomenology of the Alien
Bernhard Waldenfels

Abstract
Human creations are neither pure discoveries nor pure inventions, they provide an answer to ›counter-happenings‹ by forming something as something else. With their delays and anticipations, they are subject to a shift in time. Their social character means that something happens to us simultaneously as it happens to others, and we respond by means of co-affection and corespondence. We encounter collective forms of ›challenge‹ and ›response‹ in the form of climate change, flight, or viral pandemic. Phenomenology expresses itself in an inventive phenomenotechnique that determines how
we respond. Responses are creative, just as creations are responsive – there is always alterity at play.
