Investigation of causes of blackberry chlorosis on alluvial soil in Slavonia
Abstract
The paper presents the results of research into the causes of chlorosis of blackberries grown on alluvial soil in Slavonska Posavina. Research has identified complex chlorosis of Thornfree variety leaves, caused by disturbances in iron nutrition and manganese deficiency. Severe chlorosis of blackberry leaves was found on alluvial soils of slightly alkaline reaction with pH 7,55 to 7,80 and 0,50 to 1,20%, carbonate. Slight leaf chlorosis was found on very weakly alkaline soils with pH 7,40 to 7,50 and 0,17 to 0,80% carbonate. Healthy blackberry twigs were on neutral reaction soil with pH 7,00 to 7,10, and 0,17 to 0,35% carbonate. Under the chlorotic shrubs of blackberries, the soil is rich, i.e. twice better supplied with AL available phosphorus than under healthy shrubs. Very chlorotic leaves contained an excessively high concentration of nitrogen (5,09%) and phosphorus (0,79%), and had an unfavorable ratio between: P/Fe (47), Ca/K (0,60) a nd ( Ca + M g)/K ( 0,82). Very chlorotic leaves contained more potassium than slight chlorotic and healthy leaves. Slight chlorotic leaves had an excessively high nitrogen concentration (4,19%), at the limit of excess phosphorus concentration (0,43%), normal calcium concentration, low potassium and magnesium concentration, and less favorable P/Fe ratio (24,2), and cation balance (Ca + Mg)/K (1,35). Green leaves are well supplied with nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium, and poorly potassium and magnesium. Very chlorotic, slight chlorotic and healthy leaves contained the same concentration of iron (from 173 to 176 ppm), but the P/Fe ratio is significantly less favorable in chlorotic leaves, which indicates a blockade of active iron. Manganese concentration is excessively low in very chlorotic leaves (10 ppm), very low in slight chlorotic (25 ppm) and low in green leaves (33 ppm).
