Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine motivational structure on the sample of 819 recreative runners,
participants in Croatian running schools and to investigate the differences in their intrinsic motivation and goal orientation regarding gender. The results showed high level of intrinsic motivation for running on the whole sample. It was found that male runners in comparison to female runners are strongly motivated for
running by development of perceived competence through running, but they also fell much more pressured to improve time and achieve results and have more prominent ego goal orientation. Female runners evaluate their success predominately by self-referenced criteria of success, based on personal skills improvement and learning. Unlike the male runners who are dominantly driven by motives of competition, social recognition and approval, female runners are significantly more motivated for running by motives of weight control, illness avoidance, body image, stress management, general positive health influence and health pressure, maintenance of mobility and the sense of group affiliation.
